Consider Axle Caps

I have been using the Axle Caps product for some time now. Its master set of axle caps was my latest investment. Before, I used an assortment of discarded axle caps that were left at dealerships when new trucks arrived or ones that I made out of plywood.  They never seemed to be able to hold up for any length of time. As I said in the main story, I have used cardboard and old impound/campaign signs and a few of the older molded plastic covers as well.

There had to be a better way to handle axle removal and still look good by keeping the customers’ vehicles clean. So I went looking around for something better. I found Wayne Olson, president of Olson and Company and the man who makes Axle Caps (see next story). He demonstrated them for me at a tow show and I ordered a master set of his caps.

I do a lot of motor home and bus tows so the Axle Cap axle covers were of interest. They have a small removable plug – just what I was going to have on the caps I was going to make myself. On the long-distance tows I do, axle grease retention is a concern. I wanted the ability to add fluids when in tow to avoid the experience of burning up a towed bus or motor home. Plus I didn’t want axle grease to wind up all over the rims and sides of the vehicles nor did I want to get covered in it or slip on it if it ran out.

Axle Caps are made out of a very durable polyethylene plastic and include spacers to adjust for smaller bolts and washers. The first time I used them was on an MCI bus and they worked just right. I did not have much leakage when I pulled the axles, and after the 200-mile tow, there were only about three drops of grease on the rim!

The next time I used them while towing a tractor with rear-end problems.  I used the four-in-one Axle Caps set and they covered the axles just fine. I feel they are well worth including on a tow truck. This product will help towers project a more professional image to customers.
